CALL FOR PROPOSALS (DEADLINE FEB 1ST): AET Events at NAEA Convention 2016 (Chicago)

Call for Participation: Art Education Technology and Social Theory in Art Education: Connecting Special Interests

Event: NAEA 2016, Chicago, IL

When: Friday, March 18, 9-9:50am

Where: McCormick Place/Lakeside Center/E353b/Level 3

About/Session Description: Artists working in socially-engaged art contexts are dependent on the involvement of others as the primary component of the art medium. By co-creating artworks with an audience to inspire discussion and social exchange, socially-engaged art practices cover a range of topics such as ethics, social norms, media effects, and collaboration, often using interventionist strategies with existing social systems.

As we become more connected in our daily lives through technologies like mobile phones and social media, digital tools and methods are one way socially-engaged art is being explored, providing avenues for artists to serve as leaders in the community. In this panel discussion, we ask presenters to share ways technology is being used in socially-engaged art practice, citing works that incorporate digital media for collaboration, cooperation, crowd-sourcing, or as a place for activism. This session is designed to build bridges between the Caucus of Social Theory in Art Education and the Art Education Technology special interest groups, showing examples of the connections between the two special-interest groups and shared practices.

Interested participants please submit an example of your work that fits the description above in the form of a 150 word descriptive paragraph (optional hyperlinks and/or social media pages are welcome as exemplars) to be considered for inclusion. Session responsibilities will include individual presentation (7-10 minutes) and 10-15 minutes for panel discussion. Session participants will be acknowledged with a letter of recognition, write-up on issues groups’ websites, and the NAEA newsletter.

Submit Proposals: Please submit your description to: Submission are due by February 1st. **NOTE: This session is Friday, March 18, 9-9:50am. We are unable to reschedule the session if this conflicts with other sessions you are participating in.**
